A Journey Rooted in Punjab’s Heartlands
Des Raj Kali’s journey began in Mithapur village, Jalandhar, where he absorbed the influences of Sufi saints and Dalit writers like Lal Singh Dil and Sant Gulab Das. These early experiences laid the foundation for his later work that would captivate hearts across the world. We met first time when he was the resident editor of the magazine section of Dainik Bhaskar at Jalandhar. Since then we have always been in touch, every time discussing some new topic. I always enjoyed his company. He passed away at a very early age of 51, on 27th August 2023. His literary works were celebrated on platforms ranging from the Jaipur Literature Festival (2010) to special sessions at Nottingham Trent University in England, Montpellier University, in France, and Monash University, in Australia, among others.

Kali’s deep connection to his culturally elite Dalit background allowed him to articulate the struggles, injustices, and aspirations of Dalit life through his novels and short stories. Through his bestseller “Shanti Parav,” published by Orient Blackswan, Kali offered a perspective on post-colonial Punjab from a Dalit vantage point. Themes of governance, violence, and peace were deftly woven into the narrative, earning him accolades and recognition.
Ghadar Movement’s Historian: Rediscovering Forgotten Heroes
Kali’s dedication extended beyond fiction as he meticulously documented the history of the Ghadar movement. His books like “Ungauley Nayak” and “Gadri Banta Singh Sanghwal” breathed life into forgotten stories, showcasing his commitment to preserving the legacy of those who fought for freedom.

Kali’s impact reached beyond borders as he became a celebrated figure at prominent festivals including the Jaipur Literature Festival and Samanvay Samagam. His engagements with foreign universities fostered connections between diverse communities, highlighting the universality of his themes.

Apart from his written legacy, Kali’s editorial role in “Lakeer” and his directorial endeavor “Kitey Mil Ve Mahi” showcased his multi-faceted talent. His commitment to amplifying marginalized voices through these mediums reinforced his status as a visionary storyteller.
A Living Legacy
While Des Raj Kali’s physical presence may have departed, his impact endures. His words continue to resonate, drawing from the cultural riches of Punjab and the resilience of Dalit narratives. Through his literary prowess, Kali remains an eternal part of Punjab’s cultural fabric, inspiring present and future generations alike.
Kali was running his own YouTube channel BarqtanWebTV, a platform where he discussed caste issues, culture, tradition, Punjab, Punjabi, and Punjabiyat, and human-interest issues. Kali’s office near Jalandhar Doordarshan Kendra remained our sought-after destination, where friends used to meet and discuss many things ranging from life, society, politics, and national and international issues.
