5 Of The Best Weekend Getaways From Kathmandu

Nagarkot

Distance from Kathmandu 32 km / Travel time, up to 1 hour.

Nagarkot is the perfect weekend getaway from Kathmandu, especially for first-time visitors. Why? It’s only a short drive from the city, and you can wake up to the incredible sight of the sun rising over the Himalayas. This charming hill station offers a breath of fresh air and stunning panoramic views that leave you speechless.

Two days in Nagarkot is a delightful retreat from the crazy streets of Kathmandu. But it’s also possible to visit Nagarkot as a day trip from Kathmandu, assuming you’re happy to get up early enough to make it before sunrise.

Although I do highly recommend spending at least 1 night in this peaceful little village. As the sun sets behind the majestic Himalayas, you’ll be treated to a mesmerizing sight that paints the sky with shades of orange and pink.

Many of the hotels in Nagarkot have accessible rooftops for viewing the mountains. The property I’ve visited multiple times over the years and would recommend above all is Hotel Viewpoint. By far the best location and from the rooftop there are uninterrupted views of the Himalayas.

Besides the amazing mountain views, there’s also a range of outdoor activities. Hiking trails crisscross the area, inviting you to explore the lush forests and terraced fields. Plus, local villages, small temples, and plenty of local restaurants.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photography buff, or simply seeking a peaceful weekend getaway from Kathmandu, Nagarkot has something special to offer.

Chisapani – Nagarkot Trek

Distance from Kathmandu (trek starting point) 45-minute drive / Trek 2 nights, 3 days.

For those seeking a short yet unforgettable adventure on their weekend getaways from Kathmandu, the 3-day Chisapani Nagarkot trek is a must! This trek combines the best of nature, culture, and breathtaking views, without having to travel too far from Kathmandu. And, is another option for experiencing a breathtaking Himalayan sunrise from Nagarkot.

Starting from Sundarijal, the trek winds through lush forests, charming villages, rice fields, and up plenty of stairs. Chisapani is the first stop and welcomes tired trekkers with cozy tea house accommodation and warm hospitality. Rest up for the evening, enjoying local dishes while getting a taste of Nepalese village life.

The next day takes you to Nagarkot and even if you’ve been previously, witnessing the sunrise over the Himalayas is undoubtedly amazing.

The Chisapani Nagarkot trek is a short but sweet journey that promises a taste of Nepal’s natural beauty and village culture, all within a convenient weekend getaway from Kathmandu.
