The holiday season in Salt Lake City is a time of wonder and joy, and nothing says Christmas quite like the dazzling display of lights that adorn the city. From twinkling street corners to spectacular light shows, the city’s festive lights are a must-see during the holiday season and the best things to do in Salt Lake City with kids.
In this post, I’ll give you my insight on where are the best Christmas lights in Salt Lake City, ensuring you don’t miss any of the sparkling splendor this year.
Is it Free to See Christmas Lights in Salt Lake City?
After living in Utah for a few years I can tell you that there’s nowhere else like it in terms of free or affordable and amazing decorations and activities for Christmas or Halloween.
Most of the Christmas light displays in Salt Lake City are free to enjoy, making it the perfect trip for families wanting to experience the magic of Christmas without denting their wallets.
There are of course a couple of exceptions to this including the Luminaria experience at Thanksgiving Point, which requires a ticket (but it’s worth it!) .
Best Christmas Lights in Salt Lake City
1. Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point
When?: Late November to early January
Starting the list off with a bang, Luminaria isn’t just a light show, it’s the largest holiday light display in Utah. With your ticket, you can step into a world where gardens are aglow with radiant lights and interactive displays for the whole family.
Kids will love the larger-than-life Light of the World Garden, a 120-foot tall tree, and enchanting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ.
There are plenty of add-ons that you can book so don’t miss the the chance to roast s’mores, making it a night of wonder and joy for the little ones. Plus, regardless of what time of year you visit SLC, a trip to Thanksgiving Point should be on your list of things to do!
2. Zoo Lights at Utah’s Hogle Zoo
When: December
Turn your holiday evening into a wild adventure at Zoo Lights at Hogle Zoo! For a small fee, families can wander amidst luminous animal sculptures, and twinkling light tunnels, and even catch a glimpse of Santa Claus.
It’s important to know that you won’t be able to see most of the animals, but children will love the animated light displays, the chance to ride the carousel, and the warmth of hot chocolate as they explore the zoo under the glow of over a million lights.
3. Tree of Life at Draper City Park
When: Mid-December to early January
The Tree of Life is a free spectacle that will leave the whole family in awe. This massive, ancient tree is wrapped in thousands of strings of colorful lights, creating a magical aura.
The park’s atmosphere is perfect for family photos, and the light display offers a peaceful backdrop for an evening stroll or picnic.
And if you’re around after Thanksgiving, there is also an annual tree lighting ceremony which is fun to watch!
4. Temple Square
When: Day after Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day
Temple Square is a festive paradise that’s completely free and perfect for families. The square dazzles with millions of lights, creating a fairytale-like setting.
There are generally life-sized nativity scenes and music performances to entertain you throughout the holiday season and a huge lit-up Christmas tree.
5. Ice Castles
When: Depending on weather conditions, typically open in late December or early January and last until late February
Located near Salt Lake City, the Ice Castles are often hosted in different places each year but always create a magical playground full of ice sculptures, tunnels, and slides illuminated with LED lights.
Kids will feel like they’ve stepped into a frozen kingdom, complete with thrones and mazes, providing a unique and unforgettable winter adventure.
We’ve visited twice already and although the tickets can be a little bit pricey, the boys love it and I think it’s absolutely worth it.
6. Christmas Street in Sugar House
When: Starts early December and continues until after Christmas
While it’s not an official event put on by the city, on the self-proclaimed Christmas Street you’ll find that every house is always lit up from start to end. There is even a giant Christmas tree in the middle of the road!
Whether you park and take a stroll along to see the lights or drive the whole way, this delightful neighborhood display is free and perfect for families.
7. Christmas In Color
When: Starts mid-November and lasts until just after New Year’s Day
I think that Christmas is one of the best times to visit Utah as there is so much to do that doesn’t even require much energy.
For a fun drive-thru experience, head to Christmas In Color in Salt Lake City. Located in South Jordan, this unique event will dazzle you with synchronized light shows to holiday music.
You can enjoy this spectacular display right from the comfort of your car as the music is played through a special radio station, making it perfect for keeping little ones cozy while they watch the dazzling array of lights and animations.
8. Gardner Village
When: Lit from mid-November until the end of December
Gardner Village is a quaint and free attraction that takes families back in time while embracing the spirit of Christmas.
During the holiday period, the village is lit with charming Christmas lights and whimsical displays, plus kids can participate in fun elf scavenger hunts.
The historic setting only adds to the enchantment, making it a delightful visit for both children and adults.
Best Private Houses with Amazing Christmas Lights in SLC
If you’re looking for something a little more casual and without so many crowds, there are plenty of private houses that are worth the drive.
