What to Do in Khao Lak? A Family-Friendly Guide 2024

How to Get to Khao Lak

Getting to Khao Lak is actually really straightforward. If you’re flying internationally, the closest airport is Phuket International Airport (HKT). From there, you can easily get a taxi, or what I would recommend is pre-booking a transfer with GetYourGuide. Khao Lak is approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive away from Phuket Airport.

Alternatively, if you’re already exploring other parts of Thailand, there are buses and minivans connecting Khao Lak with popular destinations like Patong, Krabi, and Bangkok.

So, What to Do in Khao Lak?

Ah, the essential question when planning a trip; What to do in Khao Lak? This area is equipped with activities to suit every preference. Sink your toes into the soft white sand at the best beaches in Khao Lak, get a cultural experience while wandering Bang Niang Market, and witness the skills of local Muay Thai fighters. – just to name a few!

White Sand Beach Khao Lak

One of the biggest reasons people flock to Southern Thailand is for the incredible beaches. And, with fewer tourists here compared to Phuket, finding the best beaches in Khao Lak is a must-do.

With its powdery white sands stretching as far as the eye can see, White Sand Beach is a true tropical paradise. Whether you’re a sun seeker, after a good local meal, a massage, or simply needing some relaxation. This pristine white sand beach is the perfect backdrop.

If a day trip to White Sand beach isn’t going to satisfy you, then there’s the option to book accommodation only meters from the shore at Ao Thong Beach Resort.

Or, for something a little more upmarket, The Sarojin is a 5-star property that is just a short 200 meters from White Sand Beach.

Bang Niang Market

For a real taste of Thai dishes and locally made clothing, handcrafts and souvenirs, head to Bang Niang Night Market. The market comes alive in the evenings, with colourful stalls, enticing aromas, and the sounds of chatter filling the air. Don’t forget to haggle for the best deals and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere.

Khao Lak’s Bang Niang Market is open year-round, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday from 10 am to 11 pm. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon till around 8 pm (some stalls close early).

Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Center

Gain an insight into Khao Lak’s tragic history and pay homage to the lives lost in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami at the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Center. This touching memorial features interactive exhibits, artwork, and a serene atmosphere for reflection.

It serves as a reminder of the resilience of the local community and the importance of cherishing each moment we’re given.

The Tsunami Memorial Center is along the coast in north Khao Lak. It’s open from 8 am – 8 pm every day and there is no charge to enter.

Muay Thai Khao Lak

Why not embrace the spirit of Thailand with a dose of action at a Muay Thai match? Only a few minutes walk from our resort was Jaroenthong Muay Thai. For as little as 350 Bhat, you can watch skilled fighters showcase their talent in this ancient martial art, accompanied by traditional music and a lively atmosphere.

I’m not sure if I was the only one but I was expecting this to be the “real deal” and see the true power of Muay Thai live. Although this was more of a performance for the tourists, winners were pre-loaded and no one was getting hurt.

But whether you’re a martial arts enthusiast or simply curious to witness the show. Muay Thai in Khao Lak is a fun experience and still an opportunity to see their skills.

Similan Islands Day Trip

Escape the mainland and embark on a day trip to the breathtaking Similan Islands. Renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life. These pristine islands are a haven for snorkelers and lovers of the outdoors. Join a guided tour to explore hidden coves, swim alongside tropical fish, and soak up the natural beauty of this protected marine park.

Check out this early bird day trip with GetYourGuide. A Similan Islands day trip from Khao Lak that arrives before anyone else. The early start is worth it because the downfall to day trips like this can be the large amount of tourists crammed into one place. It’s often overwhelming and can negatively impact the experience.

But when asked what to do in Khao Lak, I would still recommend visiting the Similan Islands – they are stunning.
